In a groundbreaking move to diversify Australia’s construction industry, leading contractors are inviting women to step into the world of hard hats and high-vis for an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at major construction sites.
The Australian Constructors Association (ACA), backed by the NSW Government, has launched the “It’s Possible” campaign, targeting women seeking mid-career changes. The initiative offers exclusive tours of four significant infrastructure projects across New South Wales, including the Western Sydney International Airport and the Sydney Children’s Hospital expansion.
“We hear time and time again that women don’t apply for jobs because they don’t tick every box,” says ACA CEO Jon Davies. “The ‘It’s Possible’ campaign shows women that they already have the skills to thrive in construction.”
The programme highlights success stories like Moreta, who traded her desk-bound role as a claims manager for a dynamic career in construction. “What I like most about construction is the job variety – every day is different,” she shares. “And if anyone says women can’t work in construction, it’s not true. More and more women are joining the industry.”
The site tours, scheduled between March and May 2025, include:
- Western Sydney International Airport (12 March)
- Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 (1 April)
- M1 Pacific Motorway extension (16 April)
- Eurobodalla Regional Hospital (1 May)
This NSW Government-funded initiative aims to break down barriers and misconceptions about the construction industry. Interested women can register for tours at www.itspossible.net.au, where they’ll get firsthand experience of live construction sites and meet successful women who have already made the transition.
For an industry traditionally dominated by men, this initiative represents a significant step towards creating a more diverse and inclusive construction sector. As Davies puts it, “Take the first step — sign up today and discover a career that could change your life.”
