In a significant leap forward for pet owners across New South Wales, the state government has launched a modernised NSW Pet Registry that transforms how residents manage their pets’ information. As of February 2025, this digital innovation has already attracted over 81,245 pet owners and 6,131 breeders, marking a new era in digital pet management.
Key Features of the New System
The streamlined process now allows pet owners to:
- Register pets using their Service NSW login
- Complete registration online in minutes (rather than days)
- Pay registration fees digitally without visiting council offices
- Transfer ownership instantly online
- Receive real-time SMS or email reminders for desexing
- Create detailed pet profiles with photos and contact information
- Update address and contact details immediately
A Significant Upgrade
“We know dogs and cats are much loved members of the family in many NSW homes and it can be devastating if they ever go missing,” says Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig. This new platform represents a major upgrade from its 20-year-old predecessor, bringing pet management firmly into the digital age.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib emphasises the platform’s mobile-friendly design, noting that it “delivers an enhanced and mobile-friendly experience for pet owners to have all pet-related information in one place.”
Important Reminders
The system maintains the legal requirements that:
- Microchipping and registration remain compulsory for NSW cats and dogs
- Adopted pets from council pounds or designated rehoming organisations come pre-microchipped and are eligible for free registration
Liverpool City Council offers its residents FREE microchipping for dogs and cats. Contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on phone 1300 36 2170 for more information. Fairfield Council also run special offers from time to time for microchipping.
Future Developments
The NSW Government isn’t stopping here. Plans are already in motion to expand the platform’s functionality to include:
- Dedicated access for councils
- Integration with rehoming organisations
- Veterinary access
- Additional features to enhance pet management
For pet owners in NSW, this digital transformation means easier compliance with registration requirements and better tools for keeping their furry family members safe. The new system not only streamlines the registration process but also helps councils provide better services through the collected registration fees.
This modernisation represents a significant step forward in digital government services, making NSW a leader in digital pet management and welfare. Pet owners can access the new registry at https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov.au/.
