Sonnel Hospitality has submitted development plans for a comprehensive $33 million renovation of the iconic Crossroads Hotel, marking a significant milestone in the venue’s storied history.

Strategically positioned at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Camden Valley Way, this prominent hospitality venue last underwent substantial renovations in 2017 under the stewardship of Marlow Group. The establishment made headlines in 2022 when it was acquired for a record-breaking $160 million by a consortium led by the late former Sydney Lord Mayor, Nelson Meers.

The Crossroads Hotel, consistently ranked among NSW’s top 10 licensed venues by Liquor & Gaming, has long served as a vital stopover for transport workers and travellers. The proposed redevelopment aims to broaden its appeal whilst maintaining its position as a cornerstone of the local community.

According to the development application lodged with Liverpool City Council, the ambitious renovation programme encompasses:

  • An expansion of accommodation facilities from 15 to 39 rooms
  • Creation of new outdoor spaces, including a courtyard and beer garden
  • Addition of a dedicated function room and family-friendly children’s area
  • Enhanced parking facilities with a designated five-vehicle pick-up and drop-off zone
  • Comprehensive redesign of food and beverage operations

The Sydney Western City Planning Panel will assess the development application, which was submitted in late January.

Dating back to the 1830s, the Casula establishment carries significant historical weight, though its reputation has weathered various challenges, including its involvement in an early COVID-19 outbreak cluster and historical associations with convicted serial killer Ivan Milat.

Sonnel Hospitality has emerged as a significant player in Sydney’s hospitality sector, recently expanding its portfolio through acquisitions from Redcape, including the Australian Hotel & Brewery and Eastwood Hotel. The group has also garnered attention for implementing inclusion initiatives across its Western Sydney venues.

While specific details of the Crossroads redevelopment remain confidential, Sonnel Hospitality indicates further information will be released in the coming weeks.
