Liverpool residents, mark your calendars: the long-awaited Public Inquiry into Liverpool City Council is set to hold hearings that many hope will finally unveil the truth behind years of alleged mismanagement and integrity struggles. Dubbed by some locals as “Judgement Days,” these hearings represent a pivotal moment for the city as the inquiry seeks to address deep-seated concerns about the council’s governance.

The hearings will take place in two phases: from 14 July to 1 August 2025 and 18 August to 29 August 2025, with sessions running from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, including breaks. To ensure transparency, the hearings will be live-streamed, and daily transcripts will be made available on the inquiry’s website. However, seating at the venue will be limited, prompting officials to encourage the public to tune in online for real-time updates. Details on the live stream will be announced closer to the hearing dates.

This inquiry comes after years of growing frustration among Liverpool residents about the council’s handling of critical issues and alleged lapses in integrity. The Commissioner has already disclosed potential conflicts of interest, including prior professional connections with individuals linked to the council, but has assured the public of his impartiality.

Local Voices:

For many in Liverpool, this inquiry is long overdue. One local resident shared her thoughts, saying, “It feels like we’ve been kept in the dark for too long. Finally, we might get to the bottom of what’s really been going on at the council. This is about accountability and restoring trust.”

Another resident on social media also commented, “Liverpool deserves better leadership. For years, we’ve seen decisions made that don’t seem to benefit the community. This inquiry is a step towards rebuilding faith in our local government.”

Background and Community Concerns:

The Liverpool City Council has faced scrutiny in recent years, with allegations of poor governance and questionable decision-making surfacing repeatedly. In fact, this inquiry follows a series of public concerns and interventions aimed at addressing these issues. Many residents believe the council’s struggles have hindered the city’s progress and tarnished its reputation.

The Commissioner has emphasised the importance of transparency, stating that while some hearings may be conducted privately, the majority will be open to the public. However, he has also acknowledged past connections with individuals linked to the council, which could potentially raise questions about impartiality. Despite this, the Commissioner has reassured the public of his commitment to conducting a fair and thorough inquiry.

Call to Action:

As the inquiry approaches, Liverpool residents are encouraged to stay engaged, whether by attending the hearings in person or following the live stream. This is a moment for the community to come together and demand the accountability and transparency it deserves.
